Our Story
Empower Café began as something entirely different—a print shop that later became a storage space. But with vision, partnership, and purpose, it was transformed into something much more: a place where opportunity is served alongside every cup of coffee and every meal.
The idea for the café was born through a combination of inspiration close to home and meaningful community connection. That vision was further shaped through a valued friendship with Chip Rowan, founder of the Beautiful Rainbow Café, whose guidance and partnership were instrumental in bringing Empower Café to life.
Empower Café was created to provide individuals in our programs with hands-on training and real-world experience in the culinary and hospitality industry. For those with a passion for food service, it offers a meaningful next step toward competitive employment.
This vision became reality through the generosity of key partners, including the FS Foundation, which supported critical renovations, and the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, whose investment helped fund first-year internships and ensure participants could earn while they learn
Many of the individuals you meet in the café are participants in our workforce development programs. Each person brings a unique story, a unique set of strengths, and a shared goal: to build skills, gain confidence, and move toward greater independence.
That is why we say: “It’s More Than Food. It’s a Mission.”
